Recognition for program innovation

Community Care of North Carolina (CCNC) received the Wellness Frontiers Award from the Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC) on April 3, 2013.  The Healthcare Leadership Council is a coalition of chief executives from the nation’s leading healthcare companies and organizations. The HLC award recognizes companies that successfully implement an evidence-based wellness program that prevents disease and improves the well-being of a population.

The award was presented by HLC President Mary Grealy at Wake Forest University Baptist Health Hospital in Winston-Salem. Also present was U.S. Senator Richard Burr. Accepting the award for CCNC was President and CEO L. Allen Dobson, Jr., MD, who said in part:  “I’m gratified to accept this award on behalf of the thousands of CCNC-participating providers and care managers across the state working closely with Medicaid patients to help them take charge of their health status and better manage chronic conditions."

Community Care received the 2007 Annie E. Casey Innovations Award in Children and Family System Reform given by the Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Created in 1985, the Innovations in American Government Award Program highlights and promotes excellence and creativity in the public sector. Over the years it has recognized 500 inventive and inspiring initiatives developed by governmental entities to meet some of their most urgent challenges. As one of seven winners in 2007, Community Care received a $100,000 grant for state and national-level promotion efforts.

“Community Care of North Carolina effectively demonstrates that collaboration across physician practices and social service programs can and does work to improve health care delivery while keeping costs low," said Stephen Goldsmith, director of the Innovations in American Government Program at the Ash Institute. “We are pleased to honor the achievements and innovation demonstrated in this program and look forward to celebrating its future success as its best practices in managed health care are shared across the nation.”
